objective: students will research a famous photographer of their choice,  shoot a series of original photographs inspired by that photographer's style and create a powerpoint presentation with information on their photographer to share with the class.

Because we learn from the great artists, for our next assignment we will research a famous photographer and create a series of photographs emulating their style.

You will present a Power Point presentation with information on your artist, examples of their work, and 5 photographs taken by you in the style of your chosen photographer.

This assignment will be worth 2 major project grades:

  •  100 points 5 final, edited photographs in the style of your chosen photographer.
  • 100 points for your Power Point presentation.
All of the above is to be turned-in at the bottom of this webpage!

step one: choose a photographer from the list below

You will choose a FAMOUS photographer to write about and to use as inspiration for a series of photographs.  Below are two lists of famous photographers- the first list focusing on contemporary photographers, and the second featuring master photographers from over the last 175 years.  A famous photographer is one who has work that consistently appears in galleries and museum collections and are reproduced in books and magazines.  If you want to use a photographer other than the ones listed, you must get permission from me.

CLICK HERE and read through the two lists of famous photographers.

Choose one that you find interesting.  Keep in mind that you will create your own photographs inspired by the subject matter and style of your chosen photographer.

Step two: research your artist and create a power point presentation with the following information:

Once you have decided on a photographer, research him/her more in depth.

Research the following information and include it in a Power Point presentation as outlined below:

- SLIDE 1 Artist background information ( What years did they live?  Where are they from?  What was their life like growing up?)

- SLIDE 2 Major influences and interests ( What influenced their work/style?  For example:  Ansel Adams shot landscapes because he was a huge nature lover since he was a child and was a major proponent of environmental conservatism)

- SLIDE 3 Describe their photographic style ( Landscape, portrait, still life, photojournalism, abstract, surreal, black and white, etc...)

- SLIDES 4-8 5 examples of their work with the following information (1 photo per slide)
   - Title and year photo was taken
   - Any pertinent info on how or why that photo was taken
   - The importance/significance/meaning of that photograph
   - Describe it using the elements of art and principles of design

-SLIDE 9 Why is this photographer significant or important?  What impact did they have on photography/art/history?

-SLIDES 10-15 5 Photographs taken and edited by you in the style of or mimicking the work of your chosen photographer. (See "Step 3")  Be prepared to discuss the following:

   - How is each photo inspired by or similar to the work of your photographer?  (if it directly imitates a specific photo by your photographer, you may wish to show them both side by side for comparison)

   - What elements/principles stand out in each photo?  How is that similar to your chosen photographer?

SLIDE 16 Closing statement:  Why did you choose this photographer?  What do you like (or dislike)  about their work?  Give us your opinion of them.

-step three: shoot!

  • Take a series of photographs that re-create photographs taken by your chosen photographer, or that are very similar in styl
  • HOMEWORK: You are encouraged to shoot outside of class as well.  This will be helpful to you to incorporate some different types of landscapes and subject matter than what we are limited to here at school.  When shooting outside of class, you may use whatever type of camera you have available to you (even a camera phone will do).  Just make sure that you e-mail yourself your final photos or save them to your flash drive to bring to class.
  • You will be required to turn-in 5 FINAL SHOTS that reflect the style and subject matter of your chosen artist.
  • You will also be required to edit your photos to reflect your artist's style as well (Crop, Contrast, Black and White, filters, etc.)

step 4: turn-in your work here

Use the form below to turn in your 5 final photographs in the style of your artist, as well as your Power Point presentation.
