09/11-09/12 - Native American Bead Loom (Anchor Activity)
Today we will start on our first anchor activity- the Native American Bead Loom. Students will learn a bit about the history of weaving on the loom and the use of seed beads in Native American culture, as well as learn about important terminology and techniques needed to complete a bracelet using the loom.
On day one students will come up with an original design for their bracelet and will prepare for the project by "warping the loom." On day two students will begin weaving the first few rows of beads onto their bracelets.
These projects will then be kept in students' bins to be taken out to complete during any free time in class. Completed bracelets will be due tentatively at the the end of the first marking period.

9/16 - 9/23 - Middle Eastern Kaleidoscope Tile
Students will create a glazed tile using an original design. Designs will show "reflective symmetry" similar to designs created by kaleidoscopes. Students will look at examples of Middle Eastern tiles for inspiration. Students will create a design inspired by popular Middle Eastern motifs- geometric patterns, floral designs and calligraphic designs.
Students designs will be flipped and repeated on ceramic tile to create a "kaleidoscope effect." Students will then paint the design using underglaze, have tiles fired in the kiln, and then finally complete the tiles with a final coat of clear glaze.
