
Each of the assignments detailed below must be done in your sketchbook and turned in at the end of the marking period. Each assignment should involve considerable thought and effort, and take at least 20 minutes to complete. Written assignments must be properly written and organized, and drawing assignments must be outlined, shaded, or colored, as specified. One assignment should be done each week. Sketchbooks will be checked at mid-marking period, when 4 should be finished.
Sketchbooks will be collected for grading at the end of each marking period, and will be considered as one project grade, or approximately 15% of your marking period grade.

1st marking period assignments: due November 13
1. Design a new telephone for a specific group of people- for example, teenagers, farm workers, secret agents, surfers, artists, etc. Label it's features, and note why it is designed for that group of people. Color it in.
2. Do a contour drawing (no shading) of a key ring with at least four keys on it. Look closely to see overlapping and details. Draw it larger than the keys actually are. Outline in fine-line marker.
3. Put two fallen leaves on your desk, overlapping them slightly. Look at them closely, and draw and shade them in pencil.
4. Below are paintings by well-known artists, Rembrandt, Klee, Munch, and Hicks. If you were an art collector who could purchase only one to hang in your home, which would you choose and why? Write a paragraph explaining your choice.
5. Draw a glass of water with a spoon in it. Show the visual distortion that the water and the glass create. You must actually look at a real glass of water with a real spoon in it. Draw and shade in pencil. Wait to do this assignment until we start shading in class.
6. Write a brief paragraph discussing what art skill or skills you would like to acquire through the Studio Art course or future art courses. Do you foresee an art-related collage major or career in your future?
7. Halloween is coming... Design a costume for your pet. If you don't have a pet, make one up
8. Draw and shade a subject of your choice, in a realistic manner. Use pencil or colored pencil.
2nd marking period assignments
- Draw a picture of an egg broken in half. Instead of the usual egg yolk (or chicken) inside, make up something else coming out of it. Be creative!
- You ate too much for Thanksgiving Dinner. The food has formed two armies in your stomach and is having a war. Draw the battle in action.
- Artist Roy Lichtenstein has made millions of dollars on his paintings, which are enlarged copies of comic strip art that he did not originally create. Write a brief paragraph explaining why or why not you feel that this is a violation of copyright of the cartoonist's work.
- On Christmas morning, Jeff discovers a present under the tree that is 3 feet high and 3 feet wide. It is wrapped in silver paper, and is twitching and shaking. Jeff fearfully opens it. Draw what he finds inside.
- Draw your favorite holiday gift, or the one gift that Santa forgot to bring for you.
- Drawing of your choice.
- Create a new package design for your favorite fast food (Big Mac or fries container, pizza box, soda can or cup, donut box, etc.) Color it in with marker or colored pencil.
- Fender Guitar Company has contracted you to create a new design for their 2014 new models of electric or acoustic guitars. Below are drawings for the basic shapes of standard guitars. You may draw these (larger) and create interesting graphic designs and colors, or you may create a new shape and add colorful designs.
